The lecture was delivered by Christine Corbett, of Teesside Archives. We had a good-sized audience. Christine’s presentation was clear, lively and well organised. This was a well-researched and mastered subject.
This comprehensive account of the River Tees commenced with its source at Cross Fell. A photograph of the stones at the physical source seemed a good starting point, a remote area which served the industries situated lower down in Teesside. The number of reservoirs alone showed that. Moving on down the river the history of the region began to unfold. Examples included Yarm as a major port, Stockton-on-Tees and its significant role in the railways, Middlesbrough with iron and steel and its place as the first railway town in the world. Also mentioned was the development of major chemical plants alongside the river.
The material was absorbing and the audience was attentive. The time passed easily and the audience was informed and entertained. There were questions at the end of the presentation and some continued into the later evening. Interesting maps were provided for inspection. An enjoyable evening.
