The lecture was delivered by LHG member John Davies who has given the LHG photographic presentations on a regular and frequent basis over the last few years.
The theme of the lecture was different from those on earlier occasions. This time the subject covered those who took the photographs with copious examples of their work. As might be expected the photographs ranged over a time frame beginning in the early 19th century up to the Second World War and immediately after.
John began with a brief history of early photographers and the technology and techniques of those times. Seems a far cry from today with mobile phones!
The photographs shown were mainly of the villages of Battersby, Ingleby Greenhow, Great Broughton and Kirkby. There were a few of Stokesley, Stockton and Middlesbrough. They were introduced by reference to those associated with their production. There was a booming industry producing picture postcards. While John was able to provide the names of those who produced the cards they usually described themselves as printers and stationers. John stated, however, that 75% of the photographs in his collection had no known photographers! The photographs, however, speak for themselves.
The photographs showed many places, and sometimes people, known to the audience. There was a large audience, both members and visitors. The audience was attentive and entertained. The presentation of historical photographs invites a level of participation by the audience we do not usually experience on other lecture evenings. An enjoyable evening.
