The lecture was delivered by Martin Peagam. Charmingly assisted by Inca, the dog. We had a good- sized audience. Martin’s presentation was clear and well organised. This was a well- researched and mastered subject.
This comprehensive account brought out the history of the school from its origin as a stately home through to its time as a modern school. The Hall was the family home of the Hustler family from 1680 until 1922, when the Hustlers departed after 242 years. The estate was extensive and covered a large part of what is now Middlesbrough. It is the only Grade I Listed Building in Middlesbrough.
Bought by the Middlesbrough Council it became a school in 1935 and remained so, going through different phases, until 2008. The school was closed and its activities transferred to Middlesbrough College.
The material was absorbing and the audience was attentive. The audience included former pupils who were able to add to the narrative with their own memories. The time passed easily and the audience was informed and entertained. It was a mixture of fact and anecdote with an addition of humour. An enjoyable evening.
