Our group visit to Lastingham Church went ahead as scheduled on Wednesday 17th June with seventeen members present. We were met in the church by the churchwarden, Penelope Dawson-Brown, who gave us a summary of the church’s history and pointed out many features of interest in the building. We were also welcomed with complimentary tea/coffee. The Norman crypt was particularly fascinating and remains largely as constructed in the late eleventh century. It was a warm sunny day and we were able to wander around the lovely village of Lastingham after our visit to the church before retiring to the Blacksmiths Arms in the village for an excellent lunch. Thanks have been sent from our History Group to Penelope for her time and hospitality.
I’m sure we are all looking forward to our next presentation, by Nigel Copsey, about an important local building and the influential family that made it their principal residence in this area, ‘The Eure Family of Ingleby Manor’ on Monday 13th July at 7:30 pm in Ingleby Greenhow Village Hall. Nigel is a Stonemason and Building Conservator and has contributed several volumes to the Historic England Practical Conservation series. He has also worked as Consultant Practitioner with the Fitzwilliam Estate. Free for our members, £5 for visitors. As usual, complimentary tea/coffee will be available in the Village Hall after the presentation. For those members who wish to visit and partake, drinks will be available at Ingleby Manor House itself from 6:15 pm, before moving on to Ingleby Greenhow Village Hall for Nigel’s presentation.
The regular maintenance of the Pannierman Way in Kirby is scheduled for Wednesday 1st July 2026 and anyone feeling robust enough to help should attend at the top of Hill Road at 10 am on the day.
