Autumn has arrived and the evenings are beginning to ‘draw-in’. Nevertheless, our 2026 schedule of presentations continues on Monday 19th October at 7:30 pm in Great Broughton Village Hall with a talk by John Little on ‘Four Centuries of Urban Development: Stockton-on-Tees, 1435-1835’, tracing the evolution of one of our local towns from its time as a medieval stronghold of the Bishops of Durham, through the early modern years and into the eighteenth century and early nineteenth century ‘Georgian’ period, when it became the principal port on the River Tees. Free for our members, £5 for visitors. As usual, complimentary tea/coffee will be available in the Village Hall after the presentation.
From 10 am on Monday 12th October several members of our committee will be present in the upstairs room in Great Broughton Village Hall for the archiving of various donated historical documents and other items, intended for future research into our local history by the KGBIG Local History Group. Any member wishing to attend and assist, or to take a look at the historical material, books and magazines already present in our collection is welcome to attend.
Also, tickets for our Christmas Event at Kirby Church Hall on Friday 11th December at 7:00 pm are now available for £25 per person: contact Arline on 07585089107, or Jackie on 01642 712618. The presentation will be given byMartin Peagam and entitled, T’was the Night Before Christmas, an account of how Christmas was celebrated in the Workhouse. A buffet meal (definitely no workhouse gruel!) will follow Martin’s talk.
